Marcus E. Howerton, president and CEO of Hampton-based Vircom Computers Inc., was named Virginia Young Entrepreneur of the Year in a contest sponsored by the consulting firm Ernst & Young.
Vircom assembles computers and buys close-out and liquidation models from other companies, selling them through the Internet at www.vircomcomputers.com
Howerton, 30, founded the company with his brother, Walter, in April 1995, after selling MicroServe, a company he started at age 19. Vircom had $12 million in revenues in 1997 and has done $8.5 million in sales so far this year.
Howerton's award was announced at a ceremony Thursday in Richmond. He will travel to Palm Springs, Calif., for Ernst & Young's International Conference Nov. 12-15, where he is eligible for the Entrepreneur of the Year award.
